Girls in CSUF Summer Math Program Ask Y as They Solve for X

Four dozen young women from 28 high schools participated in this summer’s Project MISS (Mathematics Intensive Summer Session) program aimed at improving their math skills and encouraging them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

David Pagni, professor of mathematics, founded the program in 1990 and still directs it, taking satisfaction from seeing 98 percent of his former participants enroll in colleges/universities, and many return to serve as tutors or guest speakers for the program.

About 20 percent of the program’s graduates over the years have gone into STEM careers, with many choosing to become doctors or other professionals. About one-third of the participants eventually go on to attend Cal State Fullerton, of which many are the first in their families to attend college. Continue reading in the Orange County Register.
