Can Compassion Lead to Altruism? CSUF Professor Travels to India to Find Out

Nawang B. Phuntsog, associate professor of elementary and bilingual education, received a 2017-18 Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship to conduct educational research in India. He is spending the summer exploring whether a “compassionate schooling culture” taught to Tibetan children in exile might lead to altruism.

“This study is based on the premise that when compassion becomes the foundation of socialization, social justice matters are addressed empathetically and responsively — from local to global levels,” said Phuntsog, who is working with the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives.
