Mildred García: Introducing a Titan of a 'Black Girl Scientist'

The words seemed to come from the depths of her soul, as if summoned by a supernatural force; a powerful message delivered with the raw emotion of someone just beginning to grasp the strength of their voice. Her measured cadence ebbed and flowed, punctuated only by a recurring phrase we don’t hear often or loud enough in this country: "Black Girl Scientist."

But that is exactly what she’d always dreamed of becoming, and as I watched her deliver her spoken word piece to a packed house at California State University, Fullerton’s Black History Month Reception, my heart swelled with pride for the role the University has played in seeing that dream to fruition.
