“Texts, Snaps and Direct Messages: The Impact of Technology in the Cycle of Violence” is the theme of Cal State Fullerton’s 19th annual Violence Prevention Conference. The free, public event takes place Friday, Oct. 26, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Titan Student Union.
Alissa R. Ackerman, assistant professor of criminal justice and a sex crimes researcher, will kick off the conference with an 8:45-9:15 a.m. keynote presentation in Portola Pavilion AB on “Filling the Void: How Technology Fosters Connection and Healing From Intimate Violence.”
Each of the following breakout sessions will be offered from 9:30-10:45 a.m., 10:50 a.m.-12:05 p.m. and 1:45-3 p.m.:
- “I Know What You Are Doing and I Know Where You Are: Using Technology and Social Media to Track, Coerce and Control” by Fullerton Police Department detectives Victoria Chandler and Cynthia Hines, Alvarado Room
- “On Easy Mode: Working to Challenge Gender Stereotypes in Gaming Culture” by CSUF students Evelin Franco and Alyssa Lopez, Ontiveros Room
- “Everything You Wanted to Know About Non Consensual Pornography (And a Few Things You Probably Didn’t)” by Adam Dodge, legal director of Laura’s House domestic violence shelter, Gabrielino Room
Dodge also will present a 12:30-1:30 p.m. lunch and learn on “The Future is Now: How Technology Abuse Continues to Evolve in Surprising Ways,” and poet/activist Yesika Salgado will deliver a 3:05-3:45 p.m. closing presentation titled “Unapologetically Here.” Both programs will be held in Portola Pavilion AB.
