Historians to Honor 100th Anniversary of 'War to End All Wars'

 

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I, Cal State Fullerton's Department of History will host a two-day educational event featuring presentations from faculty members, students, alumni and emeriti.

The free, public event will be held in Pollak Library, Room 360.

Tuesday, Nov. 13
11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Faculty panel presentation

  • "Beyond Mud and Blood: Remembering the 'World' in World War I," presented by Stephen Neufeld, professor of history
  • "The Face of the Enemy: German POW Photos as a Weapon of War," presented by Nancy Fitch, professor of history


2:30-3:45 p.m. Student presentations by History 490T "World War I: History and Memory"

4-7 p.m. Emeriti panel presentation

  • Lee Bellot, professor emeritus of history and British historian
  • Bob Feldman, professor emeritus of history and Russian historian


Wednesday, Nov. 14
10-11:15 a.m. Faculty panel presentation

  • "The Untold Story of Mrs. Goodchild, an English Woman Who Spent WWI With the New Zealand Forces," presented by Jonathan Markley, associate professor of history
  • "'No Defence Except Human Infirmity': Winston Churchill and the Dardanelles," presented by David Freeman, lecturer in history


11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Faculty panel presentation

  • "How History Is Written by the Losers," presented by Cora Granata, professor of history
  • "The Violent Mahatma: Gandhi and the Great War," presented by Robert McLain, professor of history
  • "The Problem of Nationalism, Then and Now," presented by Aitana Guia, assistant professor of history


1-3:30 p.m. "Journey's End" film screening and discussion

4-7 p.m. Alumni  panel presentation

  • "Memorials of the Great War: Local and Abroad," presented by Stephen Takacs '10, '15 (B.A., M.A. history)
  • "Influenza and the Great War: Not Just on the Home Front," presented by Judy Richonne '00, '02 (B.A. history, single subject credential)
  • "The Maori in World War I," presented by Joey Hwang '13, '18 (B.A. history and religious studies, M.A. history)
