Titan Marine Biologists Find Unique Filter System in Manta Rays

Raj Divi, a biology graduate student, and Misty Paig-Tran, assistant professor of biological science, recently published, “Manta Rays Feed Using Ricochet Separation, a Novel Non-Clogging Filtration Mechanism.”

The researchers discovered the manta ray’s unique way of filtering their food — a ricochet filter that works by separating items into different directions. They hope that their discovery will aid in removing bacteria in ocean waters and reducing the amount of infectious diseases and microplastics in oceans and harmful algae from lakes.
