Students from Cal State Fullerton’s College of Communications recently won multiple national awards at the Hearst Foundation Journalism Awards, the Associated Collegiate Press Midwinter Journalism Convention and the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Knowledge Bowl.

Journalism student Bryant Freese received first place and a $3,000 matching gift for the Department of Communications as a 2018 Hearst Foundation Journalism Awards Program winner. Freese’s sports stories were selected from 121 entries from 66 schools in the 58th annual national awards competition.

This is the first Hearst award for CSUF in several years, and Freese will participate in the National Writing Championship in June in San Francisco.

The Daily Titan took third place in the multimedia package category of the 2018 Associated Collegiate Press Midwinter Journalism Convention and Tusk magazine placed sixth in feature magazines. The Daily Titan also took first place in the four-year university, more than weekly newspaper category, and fourth place for its newspaper special edition.

Four graduate students in communication sciences and disorders won the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA) 2018 Knowledge Bowl at the CSHA Annual Convention in Sacramento: Michelle D’Mello, Melissa Sanchez, Bismah Dadabhoy and Kathy Hong-Lee.
