Marcial Prado, professor emeritus of foreign languages and literatures, died May 3.

Prado joined Cal State Fullerton in 1974 as an assistant professor of Spanish and was awarded the emeritus title in 1996.

During his tenure at CSUF, Prado was instrumental in developing the bachelor’s degree in international business with a concentration in Spanish. He also penned four books, including “Practical Spanish Grammar” and “Advanced Spanish Grammar,” and 18 articles on Spanish linguistics and Spanish for business.

Upon his retirement, colleagues noted how Prado “tremendously enjoyed teaching” and “advised and listened patiently to thousands of CSUF students, always encouraging them to finish their degree.”

Prado held a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Universidad de Villanueva in Havana, Cuba, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees in Spanish linguistics from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
