Model Minority Myth Explored in ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Is Topic of CSUF Professor


Emily S. Lee,  professor of philosophy,  discusses the model minority theory that can be seen in the various stereotypes found in the film “Crazy Rich Asians." The theory describes the belief that the lifestyles of certain racial minorities such as Asians are more likely to integrate successfully into the U.S. economy compared to other minority groups.

“As an Asian American, this stereotype should reassure me that I will inevitably rise in economic class, assimilate into the majority culture of the United States and ultimately flourish.” Lee explains.  “Under such circumstances, if one fails as a model minority, it especially demonstrates one’s ineptness."
