Zoot Velasco Turns the Spotlight on Nonprofits in New CSUF Post

Zoot Velasco, now at the helm of Cal State Fullerton’s Gianneschi Center for Nonprofit Research, is overseeing the center’s biggest event of the year, the G3X Conference held Aug. 13-16, for those working in the nonprofit sector or aspiring to.

Velasco spent that past decade as CEO of Fullerton’s Muckenthaler Cultural Center. When he arrived there, the center had a budget of less than $500,000 and was mired in debt. It drew about 10,000 visitors each year to its arts programs and about 1,000 students. He’s credited with embracing the community, bringing in free music festivals, boosting the budget to $1.3 million and attracting more than 37,000 patrons annually.

His mission is to help smaller nonprofits — those with a budget under $1 million — which constitute 80 percent of the sector.
