Augie Garrido, who coached Cal State Fullerton to three College World Series championships and went on to become the winningest coach in college baseball history, died Thursday of complications following a stroke. He was 79.
Garrido coached the Titans from 1973-87 and, after a short stint at the University of Illinois, returned from 1991-96. Cal State Fullerton won national championships in 1979, 1984 and 1995 with Garrido as the skipper. In 22 seasons with the Titans, Garrido compiled a 929-391-6 record.
Garrido, guided his teams to five national championships over a 48-year baseball career and retired in 2016 as college baseball’s all-time leader with 1,975 wins.
“Titan Athletics lost not only a great leader, but a once-in-a-lifetime friend in Augie Garrido,” said Steve DiTolla, associate athletics director. “He was a charismatic man whose wisdom impacted millions of people, especially the young men who were fortunate enough to play for him.”
