Top Ranked for Undergraduate Degrees to Underrepresented Students

Cal State Fullerton Is First in State, Second in the Nation

Cal State Fullerton is first in California and second only to Florida International University in the nation for awarding bachelor’s degrees to underrepresented students in all disciplines, according to rankings published in the Dec. 26 issue of Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.

Similarly, the campus also was second in the nation for undergraduate degrees awarded to Hispanic students in all disciplines.

The publication’s ranking was based on a 68 percent increase in the number of degrees awarded from 2016-17 and recorded in 2017-18 preliminary data figures collected by the U.S. Department of Education. Last year, CSUF ranked fourth place nationally and second in state.

First Nationally

CSUF achieved notable firsts in bachelor’s degrees awarded to ‘total minority’ – the term used by the publication – as well as specific minority groups based on majors:

  • Total minority students — parks, recreation, leisure and fitness studies
  • Total minority students — communication disorders, sciences and services
  • Hispanics — public administration and social service professions
  • Asian Americans — communications, journalism and related programs
  • Asian Americans — parks, recreation, leisure and fitness studies
  • Asian Americans — communication disorders sciences and services

In addition, the university achieved the following rankings for undergraduate degrees/specific majors:

Total Minority Students

2nd — communications, journalism and related programs
2nd — business administration, management and operation
2nd — public administration and social service professions
3rd — public administration and social service professions
5th — education

Hispanic Students

2nd — communications, journalism and related programs
2nd — education
2nd — parks, recreation, leisure and fitness studies
2nd — communication disorders sciences and services
2nd — business administration, management and operations
3rd — visual and performing arts
5th — psychology and health professions and related programs

Asian Students

2nd — health professions and related programs
2nd — business administration, management and operations
4th — public administration and social services 

Graduate Level

For graduate degrees awarded, the university garnered a first-place in the nation for the number of history degrees awarded to Asian Americans, and second place for master’s in history awarded in total minority and to Hispanics.
