Titan With Autism Finds her Path in Speech Pathology


Early in her life, Jessica Zavala set out to prove the naysayers wrong.

They said she shouldn’t be in regular classes in elementary school, that she wouldn’t graduate high school or make it to college.

On Saturday, she will graduate with a bachelor’s in communicative disorders. The 22-year-old wants to become a speech and language pathologist to work with children who, like her, have autism.

“I can tell the parents I was in that seat before,” said Zavala. “I know the process. It’s hard, but it’s going to get better.”

Zavala, who grew up in the Boyle Heights area of East Los Angeles, was diagnosed with mild autism when she was 2 1/2. She didn’t speak until she was 5. Continue reading in the Orange County Register.
