Sociology Major Uses Second Chance to Give Back to Community


When Mir Aminy wheels up to the playground near Lincoln Park in Anaheim, a flock of children rush up to say hello.

He plays a game, asking them several questions: “What makes grass green?” “Where is the ozone layer?” “What is a follicle?” The children scatter to find the nearest adult to help them with the answer. The winner gets a lollipop.

Aminy, who graduates Sunday with a bachelor’s in sociology at Cal State Fullerton, has been volunteering at the Higher Ground Youth & Family Services after-school program since last year. It started as a service learning project for one of his classes, but he quickly completed the 40 hours. He finished 120 more internship hours there two weeks ago, but keeps coming back.
