CSUF Father, Son in Marine Family Share Path to Business Administration Degrees


After serving 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and becoming frustrated with his job as a solar panel installer, Nick Deitz decided it was time to go back to school.

His son, Seth Deitz, was taking a summer class at Saddleback College when his dad walked up and asked him how he would feel if his father went to college with him.

“I said, great, let’s do it,” recalled Seth, 23. “I remember his look of bewilderment. It was like he was surprised and thought I would say no, I would be so embarrassed.”

That day in 2014 was just the beginning. Father and son attended classes at Saddleback together and transferred — at different times — to Cal State Fullerton. On Saturday they will both pick up their diplomas for the same major — a bachelor’s in business administration with a concentration in general management.
