Bringing an Engineering Perspective to Lead Diversity Initiatives and Resource Centers


Sofie Leon was an undergraduate studying civil engineering when she had her first feeling of “being the only.”

She was one of the only women, and certainly the only woman of color, in her engineering and science classes at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. It was frustrating and isolating, she said, so she started looking for a community she could call her own.

“I found the Society of Women Engineers and that was my people, my home,” said Leon, who as the new director of Diversity Initiatives and Resource Centers at Cal State Fullerton will focus on creating a comfortable and safe space for students at the five identity-based centers housed in Pollak Library as well as the campus as a whole.

For the first time in a year, the department has a full staff. The director position had been filled by Vincent Vigil on an interim basis. Continue reading in the Orange County Register.
