Campus Garners $5 Million in Grants and Contracts

Awards Include Support of Programs Encouraging College Education

Cal State Fullerton faculty and staff, programs and research efforts have garnered more than $5 million in grants and contracts during the second fiscal quarter of the academic year.

Notable is the more than $2.5 million awarded in support of programs that encourage and support students seeking a college education, from GEAR UP, a program that begins reaching out to seventh graders and works with them until college admissions, to the McNair Scholars Program, which funds and supports college students seeking advanced services.

Grant and contract recipients include:

Evelyn Soqui, director of GEAR UP Programs: $1,119,979 U.S. Department of Education funding in support of the university’s GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program).

Joshua Bilbrew, director of Educational Talent Search: $560,098 in U.S. Department of Education grants supporting the Educational Talent Search programs. 

Michael Daniel, director of the CSUF Small Business Development Center: $971,269 from the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development for the 2018-19 Small Business Technical Assistance Expansion Program, and an additional $519,300 state award for the Go-Biz Year 5 Capital Infusion Program. Lilivao Tautolo, director of the Student Support Services Program: $321,755 U.S. Department of Education funding for the Student Support Services program.

Diana Vasquez, interim director of the Upward Bound Program: $315,138 from the U.S. Department of Education in support of the university’s Upward Bound North program.  Related story: Helping High School Students Become ‘Upward Bound’

Patricia Literte, director of the McNair Scholars Program:  $242,136 U.S. Department of Education award in support of the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program. Related story: First-Generation Titans Take on New Educational Goals 

Ryan Nichols, professor of philosophy: $217,817 award from the Templeton World Charity Foundation, Inc., for “Understanding China’s Changing Moral Psychology.”

Joshua Smith, professor of physics: $162,818 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for “Data Handling and Analysis Infrastructure for Gravitational-Wave Astronomy.”

Rachel Fenning, associate professor of child and adolescent studies: $160,616 from UC Irvine/Health Resources and Services Administration contract for the “Improving Participation in Dental Care and Oral Health Outcomes for Underserved Children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).”

Phoolendra Mishra, chair and associate professor of civil and environmental engineering: $95,958 from the University Enterprise Corporation at CSUSB for the SWRCB Mountain Empire and Laguna Tech Assist Project.

Dawn Macy, director of the Center for Internships and Community Engagement: $90,326 contract from Jumpstart for Young Children Inc. for the campus Jumpstart project. Related: Titans Give Children a ‘Jumpstart’.  Macy and and Chris Perez, director of the Titan After School Education and Safety program also received an additional $9,224 Tustin Unified School District funding to support “Titan Tutoring for Utt Middle School.”

Melanie Horn-Mallers, professor of human services, and Katherine Bono, chair and professor of child and adolescent studies: $85,000 award from the City of Stanton/North Orange County Public Safety Task Force for “Building Family Resilience in North Orange County School Sites” project. Laura Gil-Trejo, director of the Social Science Research Center: $57,355 UC Santa Cruz award to continue the “Youth Leadership and Health Study: Understanding How Civic Engagement Shapes Individual and Community Well-Being” and $50,000 from the North Orange County Public Safety Task Force for the “Evaluation Services to Support AB 97 Activities” project.

Min Jung Kim, associate professor of communication sciences and disorders: $50,000 from Mediazen for the Voice Recognition Corpus Project.

Brady Heiner, associate professor of philosophy: $50,000 North Orange County Public Safety Task Force award for “Project Rebound House Initiative,” CSUF project. CSU Project Rebound is a program the supports the higher education and successful reintegration of the formerly incarcerated on campus.

C. Jessie Jones, professor emeritus of kinesiology: $25,000 St. Joseph Hospital award for “Increase Mental Health Services at La Amistad Family Health Center.”

Peter Fashing, professor of anthropology: $15,000 from the Zoological Society of San Diego in support of the Guassa Gelada Research Project.

Zair Ibragimov, professor of mathematics: $15,000 from University Enterprises Inc. for the National Science Foundation projet “CSU Louis Stokes STEM Pathways and Research Alliance (CSU-LSAMP).”

Binod Tiwari, professor of civil and environmental engineering: $12,526 California Nevada Cement Association award for “Research on Engineering Properties of Lightweight Cellular Concrete LLC Materials and State-of-the-Art Practice of Using LCC Materials in Geotechnical Engineering Practice.”

Kavin Tsang, chair and associate professor of kinesiology: $10,000 award from St. Jude Hospital for the “Lunchtime Exercise Activity Program (LEAP).”

Hannah Fraley, assistant professor of nursing: $5,000 American Nurses Foundation award for “Engaging School Nurses in Prevention of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children: A National Survey of School Nurses.”
