Project Rebound: Supporting the Formerly Incarcerated

Project Rebound, a program that supports and helps reintegrate formerly incarcerated students into the California State University system, has been incredibly successful. Over 93% of Project Rebound students are still in school after one year compared with 83% of CSU students overall, and their recidivism rate is zero compared with 50% for the state.
This year the biggest challenge is doing all that during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s infected everything,” said Brady Heiner, chair of the California State University Project Rebound Consortium and founder and executive director of Project Rebound at CSUF. “We’ve had to change on a dime to shift many of our forms of student support into virtual modalities.” Tutoring, supplemental instruction, advising and formal mentorship with professionals in the community have all gone online.
