Center Hosts Financial Genius Program

What:

Cal State Fullerton's Center for Economic Education is partnering with Girls Inc. of Orange County to offer a four-day Financial Genius Program for young women from area high schools.

The financial program is part of Girl's Inc.'s Training Week Externship Program, which provides the opportunity to explore career options, workforce development and college preparedness.

Discussions will be held on:

• Why go to college? Earning income and occupation choice
• Banking basics
• Making a budget, saving, compounding of interest rate
• Borrowing and credit
• Investing in the stock market
• Scams and schemes: protecting yourself from identity theft

More:

Participants will take part in a stock trading exercise and, time permitting, create a video on financial literacy.

"Research indicates that women tend to have lower skills and confidence in personal finance topics compared to men," said Radha Bhattacharya, who will lead the program. She is director of the CSUF Center for Economic Education and a professor of economics. "Our goal is to empower these young ladies from Girls Inc. in financial and economic literacy."

About the Center:

Cal State Fullerton's Center for Economic Education was established to promote economic and financial literacy in K-12 schools, working on a practical and applied level with the national and California Councils for Economic Education. It offers a Youth Economic Empowerment Program, a Financial Fitness Camp and stock market simulations, as well as training programs and online curriculum materials for K-12 educators. In February, the program offered a Financial Literacy and Business Olympiad for 9th- through 12th-grade students.
