Mathematics professor David L. Pagni helps a young student in last summer's Project MISS. Pagni, a 45-year faculty member, is the author of mathematics books and journal articles and has received local, state and national awards for his work.

Project MISS, an intensive, four-week campus program to prepare students for success in high school and college, is commemorating 25 years of helping young women excel in math at a luncheon celebration Friday, July 31, at the Fullerton Marriott.

The noon event is open to the public but seating is limited. Tickets are $25-$50 and table sponsorships are available. Advanced ticket purchase is required by Wednesday, July 22, and can be made online

Founded in 1990 by David L. Pagni, professor of mathematics, Project MISS — Mathematics Intensive Summer Session — focuses on instruction in algebra II/math III and pre-calculus and relates to state Common Core Standards for mathematics. Pagni also will be honored for his outstanding leadership as the program's founder and director at the anniversary luncheon.

The goal of the program is to increase the population of female students who choose careers in natural sciences, engineering and mathematics. Since its inception, more than 1,500 young women have attended the summer session, with approximately 98 percent going on to college.

During July, 62 female high school students from across the region are honing their mathematical skills through Project MISS. The 10th- and 11th-grade participants from public and private high schools in Orange County and the region includes students from Anaheim, Whittier and Fullerton Joint union high school districts; as well as ABC, Downey, Orange, Placentia-Yorba Linda, Pomona and Tustin unified school districts.

Supporting the program are the Fluor Foundation, Edison International, Beckman Coulter Foundation, Allergan Foundation, Broadcom Foundation, Walmart Foundation, Sempra Energy Foundation, Symantec Corp., Mathematical Association of America and California Mathematics Council.
