The fish tale continues for Misty Paig-Tran, assistant professor of biological science, as she and other science faculty members and student researchers study the remains of a second rare oarfish — this one washed ashore this week on Catalina Island.

Biology graduate student Andrew Barrios and 2015 alumnus Homam Jamal, who will start in the biology master’s program this fall, transported the remains to campus Tuesday.

Campus researchers will study the oarfish’s head, reproductive tract and bones. Kristy Forsgren, assistant professor of biological science, and her students will study the oarfish’s ovaries, which were 7 feet long.

From National Geographic to MSN, news outlets here and abroad jumped in to cover the story. See related links at: Christian Science Monitor, NBC News/Reuters, Nature World News, First Coast News/ABC News, The Guardian, Mirror and Daily Breeze.

CSUF researchers also continue to study the remains of a 14-foot oarfish discovered on an Oceanside beach in October 2013.
