Meet Engineer Sagil James

Research Focuses on Novel Manufacturing

Sagil James joined Cal State Fullerton in the fall as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering with a background that includes research, teaching and professional experience in nanomanufacturing, which leads to the production of improved materials and new products.

James earned his doctorate and master’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in the discipline from the National Institute of Technology Calicut in India.

Why did you pursue the opportunity to join the Titan community?

First of all, I feel honored to join the mechanical engineering program at CSUF and become an integral part of the prestigious Titan community. The world-class faculty and student body here are truly impressive. I see endless opportunities to expand my depth of knowledge and engage in collaborative research.

The mechanical engineering program has had tremendous growth in recent years, and I am delighted to be part of the transformation. In the vibrant intellectual atmosphere of the Titan community, I find ambitious people with clear directions who are open to new ideas and have the desire to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries, which fuels further growth and innovation.

What do you most look forward to now that you’re here?

I look forward to sharing my knowledge and insights with classrooms full of enthusiastic students — and change their lives. With the significant research infrastructure, collaborative colleagues across multiple disciplines and exceptional students, I also look forward to contributing to the continued growth of the mechanical engineering program, especially in the area of advanced manufacturing.

What areas of continued scholarship and research are of particular interest to you?

My research interests focus on the development of innovative, advanced manufacturing technologies, particularly at micro and nanoscale for novel engineering applications in the emerging fields of biotechnology and health systems, energy and the environment. Nanomanufacturing involves cost-effective and reliable manufacturing of nanoscale materials, structures, devices and systems. Nanoscale refers to dimension of the order of 100 nanometers or less. For example, a sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick.

What are some of your outside activities, hobbies or interests?

My hobbies include participating in community engagement activities and social events, watching sports and traveling.
