Assistant Professor of American Studies Named an Emerging Faculty Leader

Susie Woo

Susie Woo, assistant professor of American studies, was named this week as one of 10 emerging faculty leaders in the Nancy Weiss Malkiel Scholars Awards Program.

The Malkiel Scholars Award, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, supports junior faculty members with research focusing on contemporary American history, politics, culture and society, and who are committed to the creation of an inclusive campus community for underrepresented students and scholars.

Woo’s coursework and research focus on American immigrant cultures, California culture, the Cold War and the American West in symbol and myth.

Woo, who joined the Titan faculty in 2013, will receive a 12-month award of $17,500 while working toward tenure. The award is structured to assist the faculty member in engaging in and building support for systems, networks and affinity groups to make research fields and campuses more inclusive.

Established by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, the Malkiel Scholars Award Program was created in honor of her 40th year of service on the Woodrow Wilson Foundation Board of Trustees, including 10 years as its chair.
