Cal State Fullerton’s online master’s degree program in business ranks among the top in the nation, according to the 2017 Best Online Degree Programs announced today, Jan. 10, by U.S. News & World Report.

The university’s online graduate business program — the master of science in information technology — ranks 12th out of 101 programs in the magazine’s latest “Best Online Graduate Business Programs” list. The CSUF Mihaylo College of Business and Economics program tied with Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey’s New Brunswick and Newark campuses, in this category, which does not include MBA programs.

CSUF’s online graduate business program is the second-highest ranked in California. CSUF’s Mihaylo College of Business and Economics has offered the graduate program since 2005.

“The ranking reflects the rigor and quality of this program, which results in an education that equips students with the knowledge they need to excel in the next step of their lives — whether it’s a new job or an advanced degree,” said Morteza Rahmatian, interim dean of Mihaylo College of Business and Economics.

An online master’s degree in business can equip students with leadership skills and industry connections that are vital to advancing careers, according to U.S. News. The magazine evaluated several factors, including reputation, faculty credentials and graduation rates, to create rankings of the best online graduate business programs. Cal State Fullerton’s online master’s degree in engineering offerings earned the No. 26 ranking on the list of “2017 Best Online Graduate Engineering Programs” evaluated by U.S. News. The College of Engineering and Computer Science program is the top-ranked program in the California State University system and third in California, behind UCLA and USC. The program tied with Drexel University in Philadelphia in the national ranking of 65 universities. The college has offered the master of science in software engineering program since 2004, and introduced the online master of science in environmental engineering program in 2012.

CSUF’s online graduate-level education programs ranked 47th out of the nearly 200 nationwide institutions included in this year’s rankings and are the third highest in California. In 2002, the College of Education launched the master of science in instructional design and technology — the University’s inaugural online degree program. Today, the college also offers the master of science in education degree program online with concentrations in the areas of educational technology, elementary curriculum and instruction, reading education, secondary education and special education.

Online education is rising in popularity, especially among working adults who desire flexibility to complete coursework outside the boundaries of a physical campus, reports U.S. News. The 2017 rankings cover more than 1,300 programs, including bachelor’s and graduate degrees in such fields as business, engineering, education and nursing. Only degree-granting programs at regionally accredited institutions that are offered online were considered.
