University Advancement Wins Gold for Web Writing

International Award Honors ‘Frankenstein’

Cal State Fullerton’s Division of University Advancement has won a Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s Circle of Excellence gold award in the Writing for the Web category for “Frankenstein,” a multimedia piece published in fall 2017.

CASE announced the winners of its 2018 Circle of Excellence awards June 13. The international awards honor outstanding work in advancement services, alumni relations, communications, fundraising and marketing at colleges, universities, independent schools and affiliated nonprofits.

“Frankenstein” offers a behind-the-scenes look at the process of bringing a theatrical production from concept to the stage. The piece reveals the caliber of immersive, work-ready practices the university offers theater students, and how such experiences provide a blueprint for academic and professional achievement. It also highlights student-faculty collaboration and research, and serves as both a fundraising and recruitment showpiece for the College of the Arts and the Theatre and Dance Department.

The judges’ comments: “An outstanding piece of work, fully engaging the reader with moving stories, fine writing, sharp photography, interesting video and effective design. Easy to navigate. We appreciated how this piece illustrated the teamwork and intellectual capacity required to launch a theater production, and have no doubt that an equally devoted team worked together to create this beautiful piece for the web. Very, very well done and a pleasure to read.”

CASE received more than 3,000 entries for consideration in nearly 100 categories from 676 higher education institutions, schools and affiliated organizations around the world.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of “Frankenstein.” Cal State Fullerton is planning a related exhibition in the fall that will celebrate the lasting impact of the novel and its author, Mary Shelley.
