Cal State Fullerton brings thought-leaders, advocates and mentors to campus this month as part of the university’s celebration of Women’s History Month. With focus on the theme “Reclaiming Our Time,” events will include panel discussions, film screenings and a poetry slam.
March 7 — “A Woman’s Place in Politics: Looking to the 2018 Elections”
Noon to 1:30 p.m. University Hall, Room 205
CSUF faculty experts discuss the 2016 election, “Pantsuit Nation” movement, large numbers of women running for elected positions and potential gender pitfalls women may face. Speakers include Alissa R. Ackerman, assistant professor of criminal justice; Shelly Arsneault, professor of political science; and Pamela Fiber-Ostrow, professor of political science.
March 8 — International Women’s Day: “Create and Educate: Art for Empowerment”
10 a.m.-3 p.m. Humanities-Social Sciences Building piazza
Join several campus groups in recognizing International Women’s Day. Activities include presentations by women’s empowerment speakers, an interactive art piece, a resource fair and more.
March 17 — Women Veterans in Higher Education Conference
10 a.m.-3 p.m. Titan Student Union, Portola Pavilion
The sixth annual conference is an opportunity for women veterans to be empowered in their personal, academic and professional journeys. Speakers include Kayla Williams, director of the Center for Women Veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Lindsey Sin, deputy secretary for women veterans affairs at the California Department of Veterans Affairs.
March 22 — “Criminalizing Sex Work: Unpacking the Debate”
11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. University Hall, Room 205
Researchers, advocates and sex workers/survivors unite for a panel discussion about the intended and unintended consequences of policies and practices designed to punish or protect sex workers. Speakers include: Veronica Herrera, assistant professor of criminal justice at CSUF; Jennifer Musto, assistant professor of women’s and gender studies at Wellesley College; Edith Kinney, assistant professor of justice studies at San Jose State University; and Meg Munoz, founder and executive director of Abeni nonprofit organization.
