“Vireo: The Spiritual Biography of a Witch’s Accuser,” a broadcast serial opera created by Grand Central Art Center artist-in-residence Lisa Bielawa, was honored by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers as the winner of the 47th annual ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Multimedia Award in the field of music.
Created for episodic release via broadcast and online media, “Vireo” was presented in partnership by Cal State Fullerton’s Grand Central Art Center and public television station KCET. The award recognizes Bielawa; the libretto by Erik Ehn; director Charles Otte, KCETLink’s senior vice president of content development and production; Juan Devis, executive producer of Artbound; and John Spiak, Grand Central Art Center director and chief curator.
“We are excited about the future possibility of filming episodes on campus in collaboration with the faculty and students of our Titan family,” Spiak said.
ASCAP is a membership association of more than 550,000 U.S. composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers. Through agreements with affiliated international societies, ASCAP represents hundreds of thousands of music creators worldwide.
The award recipients will be honored Nov. 17 at a New York ceremony and reception hosted by music creator and ASCAP President Paul Williams.
