The College of Humanities and Social Sciences Student Success Center will host an Open House from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in front of the west entrance of the Humanities-Social Sciences Building.
Student Success Teams in each of CSUF’s eight colleges, at the Irvine Campus and one dedicated to special populations are innovative collaborations between the divisions of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, providing data-driven student advising that leverages the knowledge of the University’s faculty and staff. The teams provide support and advising services to increase graduation rates and reduce the time to earn a degree and narrow the achievement gap among underrepresented students.
“In the past two years, the HSS Student Success Team has created post grad-check, drive-thru advising for quick Titan Degree Audit ‘checkups’ and a consultation with the career specialist; intensive programs for students on probation; upper-division transfer pathways for transfer students to explore an area of interest while completing their general education; integrated career exploration and professional development opportunities; department partnerships like the Criminal Justice Success Academy, a partnership with the Division of Politics, Administration and Justice; and a centralized recruitment and advising station for the college’s study abroad and away opportunities, and the Cal State DC Scholars Program,” said Sheryl Fontaine, HSS dean.
Recently, President Mildred Garcia announced at Convocation that the achievement gap for transfer students has been eliminated completely for the first time in the University’s history. In 2012, the gap for transfer students was 5 percent.
In 2012, the gap for first-time freshman hovered at 13 percent. Three years later, it dropped to 8.7 percent, and today, it’s at 6.4 percent.
