‘Should We Still Study Slavery?’ and Other Topics at Social Justice Summit

A daylong program examining issues such as the study of slavery, preserving culture, domestic violence, homelessness and mental health in the transgender population will be held Feb. 25 at Cal State Fullerton.

“Listen. Understand. Advocate” is the theme of the 2017 Social Justice Summit, sponsored by the University’s Student Life and Leadership. The free, public program will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Titan Student Union Portola Pavilion.

The keynote speaker is Tyler D. Parry, CSUF assistant professor of African American studies, whose research examines slave marriage and violence in the African diaspora. He will discuss “The Path Forward: Confronting Oppression and Its Legacies” in his keynote address, as well as present “Should We Still Study Slavery?”

Additional sessions and speakers include:

  • “The Power of Knowledge: Higher Education, Reintegration and Liberation” — Romarilyn Ralston, CSUF Project Rebound coordinator
  • “Preserving Culture in a Multicultural World” — Toubee Yang, assistant director of fraternity and sorority life
  • “Sculpting Race: An Innovative Approach to Understanding Racial Identity Development” — Joy Hoffman, director of diversity initiatives and resource centers
  • “Step Up 2.0” — Alyssa Avila, violence prevention educator for WoMen’s and Adult Reentry Center
  • “Athletic Activism: The Power of Race and Sport” — Trimaine Davis, African American Resource Center coordinator
  • “Hungry, Homeless, But Not Helpless!” — Steve Teixeira, career services specialist for Cal State Los Angeles

Student presentations include:

  • “Domestic Violence Against Asian American Women” — Vy Le and Jonathan Nguyen, ethnic studies majors
  • “Keep the Group in Check” — Adriana Valencia Wences, ethnic studies major
  • “Dissolving the Beauty Myth: The Origins of Beauty and Media’s Impact” — Yaa Asantewaa Faraji, communications major
  • “Eliminating the Prison Pipeline: Reorganizing the Education System” — Mahdee Gill, communications major
  • “Accessibility” — Patrick Ramirez, health science major, and Hannah Elliott, communications major
  • “Mental Health in the Transgender Population” — Dai Guerra, graduate student in higher education
