CSUF Heritage Month Highlights Diverse Asian Cultures

“Together We Grow” is the theme of Cal State Fullerton’s annual celebration of Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month.

Observed during April and part of May, the celebration features several workshops, film screenings, culture nights, a street market and a president’s reception.

April 4 — “Reunification” Film Screening and Discussion

11:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., Titan Student Union’s Gabrielino Room
An insider’s look at the contemporary Asian-American immigrant experience, “Reunification” explores one family’s financial and emotional struggles, effects of divorce and cultural communication gaps. The film will be followed by a discussion with director Alvin Tsang.

April 12 — President’s Reception

5:30-7:30 p.m., Titan Student Union’s Portola Pavilion B
President Mildred García hosts a heritage month reception featuring keynote speaker Mamta Accapadi, who describes herself as a “mother, womanist, Bollywood fan, educator, student, yogi, chocolate lover, and vice president of student affairs at Rollins College.”

April 17 — “Eating Falafel in My Converse”

4-5 p.m., Room 211B of University Hall
Maisune Abu-Elhaija, social justice educator student lead for the Asian Pacific American Resource Center (APARC), hosts an interactive workshop on what it means to be Arab in America. The session will introduce Arab-American culture and highlight the commonalities between marginalized communities.

April 18 — “Here and There: The 1.5 Generation Experience”

5-6 p.m., Room 211B of University Hall
Vy Le, Asian American studies major, hosts an interactive workshop exploring the different experiences of people who identify with and as 1.5 generation.

April 19 — Titan Night Market

6-9 p.m., Student housing piazza
Inspired by the popular 626 Night Market and traditional Asian street markets, the Titan Night Market brings the APIDA community together by sharing culturally significant food, performances and activities.

Culture Nights

Several student organizations will host culture nights throughout the month of April, including:

  • April 7 — Cambodian Student Association Culture Night from 6:30-10 p.m. in the Titan Student Union’s Portola Pavilion B
  • April 15 — Japan Culture Expo from noon-5 p.m. in the Titan Student Union’s Portola Pavilion
  • April 15 — Nikkei Student Union Culture Night from 6:30-10 p.m. at Hope International University
  • April 22 — Indian Student Association Culture Night from 6:30-10 p.m. at Hope International University
