Nancy Segal, professor of psychology and director of the Twin Studies Center at Cal State Fullerton, discusses the origins of twin research design in a piece explaining why science loves studying twins. According to Segal, the first attempts to study twins started in 1875 when English scientist Francis Galton, who was also Charles Darwin’s half-cousin, “first came upon the twin research design, which is really a very simple and very elegant way of looking at behavior.”
