Want to know what it takes to launch a public relations company or determine whether the master’s degree program is the best path to your dream job?

More than 40 professionals working in communications-based occupations such as marketing, social media and journalism, are set to share their insights and experience at Cal State Fullerton’s annual Communications Week April 26-30. Hosted by students of the College of Communications, the annual event takes place virtually again this year.

The 43rd annual Comm Week features Titan alumni Cathi Douglas, a public relations consultant, and Jackie Moe, web editor for the Orange County Business Journal.

In her scheduled session on April 28, at 1 p.m., Douglas will offer tips on how to start a company, attract and retain clients, develop a support team and pivot during the pandemic. Moe’s April 26, 7 p.m. session focuses on how to make the most of your CSUF master’s degree in communications.

Other speakers include three-time Emmy award-winning journalist Francisco Cáceres on April 27 at 4 p.m., senior manager for digital news at Univision Olivia Liendo at 1:30 p.m. and U.S. Representative for California’s 35th District Norma Torres on April 28 at 11 a.m.

Comm Week is coordinated by students in an event planning and management course taught by Waleed Rashidi, assistant professor of communications.

Rashidi said this year’s conference also presented the challenge of organizing an event while attending classes remotely as well. “This gives these students the ability to adapt between an in-office and work-for-home experience, or between virtual and in-person events,” he said.

The course prepares communications students by providing hands-on experience in coordinating and executing large-scale events.

“I have learned so much about effective communication and teamwork, while simultaneously having the opportunity to meet amazing people such as my fellow members of the communications committee,” said Evelyn Lim-Garcia, a sophomore and communications major who is the Internal Public Relations Coordinator for the event.
