‘Acknowledging Our Latinx Roots and Celebrating Our Diversity’

Student groups and departments are celebrating the achievements of Hispanics through a variety of programs continuing through Oct. 11. This year’s theme is “Acknowledging Our Latinx Roots and Celebrating Our Diversity,” with the inclusion of the term ‘Latinx” to include the transgender and gender-fluid individuals among the Latino/Hispanic population.

Coming up:
Oct. 4 — “National Initiative,” a voter registration drive hosted by Lambda Theta Alpha held from 1-2 p.m. along the walkway from the Pollak Library to Titan Shops.

Oct. 5 — “The Educational Struggle: Latino Men in Higher Education” features Patricia Perez, chair and professor of Chicana and Chicano studies, at 11 a.m. in the Chicana and Chicano Resource Center (Room 109 of Titan Shops) and is hosted by Hermanos Unidos de CSUF.

Oct. 5“President’s Hispanic Heritage Month Reception,” 5:30-7:30 p.m. is being held in the Fullerton Arboretum.

Oct. 10 — “Indigenous People’s Day – Tianguis” will be celebrated from noon to 4 p.m. in the Quad. The program, which features free food, vendors, craft tables and live entertainment, is hosted by MEChA and Mesa Cooperativa.

Oct. 10 — “A Cultural Glance Through Dance, Part 1,” a workshop on the origins and history of Ballet Folklorico, as well as the meaning of the dances, is hosted by Ballet Folklorico de CSUF. The 7-8 p.m. event in the Gabrielino Room of the Titan Student Union will focus on the state of Michoacán — its music, wardrobe and cultural dances. 

Oct. 11 — “Salud: Mental Health Among Latinxs,” is a 1:30-3:30 p.m. program hosted by Latina/o Student Psychological Association in the Alvarado Room of the Titan Student Union. 

Oct. 11 — “The Role of Latino/as & Latino/a Media in the 2016 Elections” is presented from 5-7 p.m. in Room 130 of the Pollak Library. The event is hosted by the Chicana and Chicano Resource Center, Strengthening Opportunities, Access and Resources (SOAR) and the Chicano/Latino Faculty and Staff Association.

Oct. 11 — “A Cultural Glance Through Dance, Part 2” hosted by Ballet Folklorico de CSUF and offered from 7-8 p.m. in the Tuffree Room of the Titan Student Union. The program will continue discussion on the origins and history of Ballet Folklorico, specifically the wardrobe and dances of the state of Sinaloa.
