Top honors from several media organizations were awarded to publications produced by students from the College of Communications. Most recently, the Daily Titan won several honors at college media conferences held in Denver and New York City.
The student newspaper’s editorial staff won the Apple Award for Best Facebook Page and took second place for Best News Delivery at the College Media Association’s National College Media Convention earlier this month. Bonnie Stewart, the Daily Titan editorial adviser, and Jason Shepard, chair of the Communications Department, attended the conference with seven students.
The Daily Titan‘s advertising staff received two awards at the College Media Business and Advertising Managers conference in Denver. The staff won second place for Best Self-Branded Promotional Giveaway, and third place for Best Training Program. Michelle Kurland, Daily Titan advertising adviser, attended the conference with nine students.
“Our communications students get invaluable practical, on-the-job training through the Daily Titan, Tusk and Comm Week (April 20-21),” says Shepard. “They allow our students to extend what they learn in the classroom into the real world.”
Earlier this year, the Daily Titan and Tusk magazine earned awards during the Associated Collegiate Press Midwinter National College Journalism Convention in Los Angeles. The Daily Titan won ACP’s Best of Show in the daily newspaper category; Tusk took second place in the magazine category. Tusk is advised by Jeff Brody, professor of communications.
The California College Media Association held its annual awards banquet during the Feb. 18-21 convention. Daily Titan advertising student Alex Groves won second place in the Best Editorial category, and Breanna Vasquez won third place in the Best News Series category.
Tusk won ACP’s Pacemaker Award and the Daily Titan was named Best Student Newspaper in Southern California by the Los Angeles Press Club.
