CSUF Students Design Art Curriculum to Support Incarcerated Youth

Cal State Fullerton’s Center for Internships & Community Engagement introduces the Titans of Community Engagement video series, which highlights high-impact service learning opportunities across campus.

The first video in the series centers on Art 382: Art and Social Justice With CSUF Project Rebound. This service learning opportunity is based on a collaboration between students and faculty in CSUF’s College of the Arts and Project Rebound, a program that supports the higher education and successful reintegration of the formerly incarcerated. In this art course, CSUF students partner with Project Rebound to bring art curriculum and lessons to communities in Orange County detention facilities.

Led by Mary Anna Pomonis, assistant professor of art, CSUF students develop art curriculum focused on social and emotional well-being. Students gain hands-on curriculum development and teaching experience while they connect with youth participating in the program and make a meaningful impact in their lives.

By connecting with CSUF students, youth in the program experience healing through their artwork and begin to see themselves as college students. Both CSUF students and program participants  learned to evaluate existing perceptions, see past barriers, and move towards futures previously believed impossible.

The class also provides an opportunity for youth in the program to learn about Project Rebound and explore futures in higher education.
