Cal State Fullerton is gearing up for its annual Research Week, with events happening from April 14-18 at the Titan Student Union Pavilion and online. Hosted by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, this exciting weeklong event celebrates the research, creativity and innovation of students, faculty and staff.

For students, Research Week is an especially important time to engage with the university’s dynamic research community, with events focused on research compliance, the L. Don Shields Excellence in Scholarship and Creativity Award lecture and the ever-popular Student Creative Activities and Research Day.

Below are some key events that will provide invaluable opportunities for student participation and learning:

Student Creative Activities and Research Day

April 18, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Titan Student Union Pavilion

Join CSUF for SCAR Day, one of the most exciting events of Research Week. This all-day event highlights the innovative research and creative projects of CSUF students through posters and presentations. It’s a great chance to learn about peer research and creative projects, engage with faculty and staff, and connect with fellow students. Celebrate the creativity and hard work of students and be inspired by the amazing work happening on campus.

L. Don Shields Excellence in Scholarship and Creativity Award Lecture

April 14, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., Titan Student Union Pavilion

The L. Don Shields Excellence in Scholarship and Creativity Award lecture kicks off Research Week. This year, Math P. Cuajungco, professor of biological science, will present his research on zinc’s crucial role in brain function and its link to neurological diseases. The lecture will also showcase student research from Cuajungco’s lab, highlighting student contributions to this vital field.

Lunch and Learn: Navigating Research Compliance

April 14,12:30 – 1:30 p.m., Zoom (visit event website to register)

Undergraduate and graduate students conducting research with human subjects must submit an Institutional Review Board protocol for approval. This lunch and learn session, hosted by the Research Compliance Office, will provide essential guidance on the IRB submission process, including ethical standards, informed consent and compliance requirements. Students will learn how to submit proposals, identify studies needing approval and navigate the IRB process to avoid delays. The session will also touch on other research compliance areas, including the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and Institutional Biosafety Committee protocols.
