Community Service Officer and First-Generation College Student Serves With Purpose

Share This:

Samuel Gonzalez, a proud Los Angeles native and first-generation college student, is making an impact in the classroom and on campus. Now, in his fourth year at Cal State Fullerton, Gonzalez is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a minor in Chicana and Chicano studies, reflecting his passion for justice and his cultural roots.

After being hired approximately two and a half years ago, Gonzalez moved up the ranks from student patrol community service officer to field training officer lead. In this challenging role, he not only carries out the regular duties of a student CSO assisting in keeping the campus community safe, but also oversees and mentors a team of nine field training officers within the program that trains new students.

“Being a student worker with the CSUF Police Department has provided me the opportunity to learn from trained law enforcement professionals,” Gonzalez said. “I’ve gained the knowledge and skills needed to advance my career in law enforcement, all while being able to pursue my educational goals. As a first-generation college student, that was incredibly important to me.”

Gonzalez always leads with empathy and compassion and encourages all CSOs to do the same. Not long after he started working with the department, he was the second person to respond to a student incident on campus. While the Fullerton Fire Department was assisting the student, Gonzalez acted as a steadfast presence and translator for the student’s mother, clearly explaining the student’s condition and next steps and ensuring she remained informed throughout the highly stressful and emotional time.

Outside of work and his rigorous academic pursuits, Gonzalez enjoys spending quality time with his family and girlfriend and watching sports.

With his sights set firmly on the future and only a few short months left at Cal State Fullerton, Gonzalez is well on his way to leaving a lasting impression on the entire CSO program and any community he serves.
