“Somewhere over the rainbow … the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true,” sang theatre major Aurora Villareal to Cal State Fullerton’s graduating class.
Villareal was one of several students who gave performances or delivered speeches during the university’s 2025 Commencement ceremonies held May 19-22.
Commencement — and the completion of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree — marks the fulfillment of a dream for many graduates, their families and supporters.
“I sincerely congratulate each and every one of you all,” said CSUF President Ronald Rochon. “My first year as your president has been filled with so many milestones but none as meaningful as today.”
Rochon urged graduates to use their gifts to make the world better for themselves and future generations. “Graduates, stay humble, stay curious and please pour into this world your positive energy. The world needs you right now more than ever.”

The president also encouraged graduates to stay connected with their alma mater, which boasts more than 320,000 Titan alumni. “Understand your journey does not end here,” Rochon said. “By the end of this commencement, you will become part of the alumni of this incredible institution we call Cal State Fullerton.”
Two alumni were awarded honorary doctorates for their career achievements and commitment to the values of the university. Former NBC LA news bureau chief Vikki Vargas ’81 (B.A. communications) addressed graduates at the College of Communications ceremony, while Disney Legend Martha Blanding inspired graduating students at a College of Humanities and Social Sciences ceremony.
In addition, public health major M Smith was honored as the 2025 Outstanding Senior and higher education master’s candidate Samantha Guzman was named the 2025 Outstanding Graduate Student. Both were recognized by the Alumni Association for their academic achievements, extracurricular or professional activities, and service to the university and community.
Business executive Tim Goff and Goodwill OC President and CEO Nicole Suydam, who serve on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the College of Business and Economics, delivered inspiring speeches to future business and community leaders.
“You’re stepping into a pretty crazy world. It’s moving fast and the pace of change is relentless. But here’s the deal: You are Titans and that’s to your advantage,” said Goff, who received his undergraduate and graduate business degrees from Cal State Fullerton and serves as senior vice president and head of Americas Residential for Assa Abloy, a Swedish company focused on locks, doors, gates and entrance automation.
“The next wave of innovation and leadership will come from people who are adaptable, curious and courageous,” he said. “I hope that sounds familiar to you because that is you. You are Titans.”
Goff and Suydam advised graduates to say “yes” to opportunities, embrace challenges and trust in themselves.
“Be ready and willing to take on assignments and jobs that don’t always make sense to you,” said Suydam, the first woman to lead the century-old Goodwill OC organization. “The right leaders will often see your potential before you do. You’ll learn new skills and gain new experiences that will take you outside your comfort zone and prepare you for jobs that you never dreamed you could do.”
