The 1977-78 men’s basketball team transformed its season into one of the greatest Cinderella stories in Titans Athletics history. Led by Head Coach Bobby Dye, the Titans garnered national attention for their power in the postseason.

After earning a 23-9 record during the regular season, the Titans advanced to the Pacific Coast Athletic Association Championship, where they defeated Long Beach State and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The team competed in the Elite Eight, and still holds the record for the longest NCAA Tournament run in program history.

Karilyn Burdick-Greenwood was the first Cal State Fullerton gymnast to win an individual championship in 1977 as the national collegiate gymnastics vaulting champion. In 1979, she helped the Titans team secure a national championship title.

While competing at CSUF, Burdick-Greenwood ’83 (B.A. business administration-accounting) became a three-time All-American from 1977-79, a two-time champion at the Western Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Regional Championship and a three-time Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champion.

Steve DiTolla

Steve DiTolla oversaw marketing and brand management for Titans Athletics. He first served the campus from 1985-92 as the associate athletics director/business affairs. He returned to CSUF in 2001 to serve as the senior associate athletics director and retired in 2020. During his time on campus, DiTolla played a key role in several of Titans Athletics’ biggest moments. He served as a sport administrator when the 1991 Women’s Basketball team appeared in the NCAA Tournament and when the 2008 Big West Men’s Basketball Tournament championship team appeared in the NCAA Tournament.

He was a sport administrator for Titans Baseball and led the searches for coaches Larry Cochell, Augie Garrido, George Horton, Dave Serrano and Rick Vanderhook — all five coaches guided the team to a College World Series. He also played an instrumental role in establishing the Titans Athletics Hall of Fame. Alongside his wife, Gail, the couple started the Steven and Gail Scholarship Endowment Fund to support student-athletes and the Titans Baseball program.

Titans Softball pitcher Taylor Dockins will be honored posthumously in the 2025 Athletics Hall of Fame.

She joined the program in 2018, making 18 appearances and finishing the season with a 7-4 record. In addition to pitching seven complete games during her first season, Dockins was named Big West Pitcher of the Week following a five-inning, no-hitter performance against the University of San Diego. This became the 57th no-hitter in program history and the first one since 2013.

In 2019, Dockins struck out 35 batters in 68 innings and pitched in both NCAA Regional games. She was also recognized with the Judi Garman Determination Award, a lifetime achievement award that honors individuals who have made a long-lasting impact on the Titans Softball program. Off the field, Dockins co-hosted the Titans Sports Network Preview Show in 2023 and served as a play-by-play and color analyst for Titans Softball home games.

After transferring to Cal State Fullerton from Cerritos College, Don Sneddon led the Titans Baseball team to a California Collegiate Athletics Association championship in 1974 and became the first NCAA Division II All-American in school history.

After earning his degree, Sneddon ’74, ’80 (B.S., M.S. kinesiology) returned to the program as an assistant coach under the leadership of former head coach and fellow Athletics Hall of Fame honoree Augie Garrido. He spent two seasons with the Titans before moving on to coach at Santa Ana College. During his community college career, he led the team to three state championships and recorded more than 1,000 wins. He was inducted into the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2015 and the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2020.
