Cal State Fullerton students are invited to celebrate the life and memory of loved ones at Associated Students Inc.’s Día de los Muertos event on Oct. 28 from 3-5 p.m. in the Quad.
Hosted in collaboration with the Latinx Community Resource Center, the event will celebrate culture, bring the community together and invite campus community member to engage in deep-rooted traditions.
Día de los Muertos is a tradition that honors the lives of loved ones who have passed away. Families believe that during this time, the spirits of their deceased family members return to visit.
“Día de Los Muertos allows everyone to learn about this tradition and fosters cultural awareness and respect for different ways of remembering loved ones,” said Ricardo Pitones, assistant director of LCRC and HSI student initiatives.
The event will feature sugar skull decorating, face painting, marigold making, candle decorating, a cultural book display and music that aligns with the holiday. To highlight cultural food, the event will include tacos and pan de muerto, a sweet bread meant to nourish the spirits when they return to visit.
“Día de los Muertos is important at our campus,” Pitones said, noting that over 50% of CSUF students identify as Latino or Hispanic. “All our staff have been hard at work to identify meaningful ways our campus community can learn about the holiday.”
