At the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships in March, Ian Dossman was looking for a breakthrough. The Cal State Fullerton sprinter had won gold in 4×100-meter relays and silver and bronze in 100m and 200m races at past conference championships but had never won an individual conference title.
Dossman, a junior from Elk Grove, achieved his goal, winning the 200m in 20.54, which broke his own school record. He advanced to the NCAA Indoor Championships, reaching the 200m final. And while he was disqualified for a lane violation, Dossman said the overall experience was highly positive.
“I gained a lot of confidence winning the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship and advancing to the NCAAs. And it was the first time I had made an NCAA final. Being there among the best sprinters in the nation changed my mindset and how I see big moments. I thought to myself, ‘I was built for this.'”
The 21-year-old Dossman kept rolling in the outdoor season. He pulled off a remarkable double at the Big West Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May, winning the 100m and 200m dashes.
He ran a wind-aided 10.02 in the 100m and broke his school record with a 20.20 clocking in the 200m. Dossman was named the Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet.
