For Cal State Fullerton senior Joseph Ortiz, studying abroad in Japan is more than an academic opportunity — it’s a dream come true. A business administration major with a minor in Japanese, Ortiz is spending the 2024-25 academic year at Waseda University in Tokyo, and it all began with a scholarship opportunity.
The Bridging Project Scholarship, which aims to strengthen relations between the United States and Japan, funds study abroad experiences for undergraduate students. Ortiz first learned about this scholarship through Abigail Segura, study abroad adviser of Study Abroad and Global Engagement at CSUF.
Helping students find scholarships is one of the many ways Segura and her SAGE team make study abroad dreams a reality.
“Scholarships play a crucial role in making study abroad accessible for students,” said Segura. “Our team is dedicated to guiding students through every step of the process — whether it’s planning their trip, navigating applications or securing funding opportunities like the Bridging Project Scholarship. Seeing students like Joseph achieve their study abroad dreams is incredibly rewarding.”
Ortiz is currently attending Waseda University in Tokyo for the 2024-25 academic year, taking economics classes and working toward completing his Japanese minor.
“In terms of education, I will aim to strengthen my speaking and comprehension skills in the Japanese language. I hope that I may also enrich myself in Japanese culture, improve my social and professional network, and gain an overall understanding of life in Japan,” said Ortiz.
Ortiz also plans to explore as much of Japan as he can within the year. “I will aim to visit at least 47 of the prefectures. I also want to indulge in the many cuisines of Japan. Finally, I want to make lasting connections with those around me, creating memories that will stay with me forever,” said Ortiz.
