Jenny Lam, a marketing and information systems major at Cal State Fullerton, is set to begin an exciting new chapter of her academic career. As a recipient of both the prestigious Freeman Asia Scholarship and the Gilman Scholarship, she will be studying abroad at Korea University, one of CSUF’s most competitive exchange programs and one of South Korea’s most highly regarded institutions.
The path to studying abroad has been both personal and challenging for Lam. As a first-generation college student and the oldest daughter in a single-parent household, she has always been conscious of the costs tied to higher education.
“These scholarships weren’t just about money; they made my dream possible,” said Lam.
For her, studying abroad is more than an academic milestone. It’s an opportunity for personal growth.
“It’s a step I need to take, not just to learn and explore, but to prove to myself that I can do hard things,” she said.
Lam’s interest in Korea University stems from a long-standing appreciation for Korean culture: “I’ve always had a deep curiosity about the country.”
Beyond cultural interest, Lam said she was drawn to the university’s strong academic reputation and global perspective, particularly within the business school.
“As someone pursuing marketing and information systems, I’m excited to see how technology and marketing intersect in a different cultural context,” said Lam.
She is looking forward to experiencing Korean campus life and traditions. She hopes to pursue a career in beauty and entertainment marketing across the U.S. and Asia and sees this exchange as essential in building a global growth mindset.
“Korea leads in beauty, tech and entertainment marketing. I want to understand what connects with global audiences and bring that insight back to my coursework and career,” said Lam.
CSUF’s Study Abroad & Global Engagement office played a vital role in helping Lam navigate the application and scholarship process. She credits information sessions, scholarship workshops and one-on-one advising for making the experience feel achievable.
“Abby, my study abroad adviser, was especially supportive. Her guidance gave me the confidence to go for a competitive program like Korea University,” said Lam.
