Cal State Fullerton College of Business and Economics alum Cameron Bishop has devoted his career to technology risk reduction. But his path to a tech-focused future began as a baseball player for the Baltimore Orioles.
When he was playing baseball, management invested in technology and data analytics. In addition to helping Bishop and others become the best athletes they could be, it helped him recognize the importance of data in every field.
“The exposure to this data increased my knowledge of my weaknesses and helped me improve all aspects of my game, which led to my success. As I was seeing the effects of how data can improve myself as an athlete, I became passionate about how data could be used to solve problems and questions in business and life,” said Bishop ’21 (M.S. information technology-data science). “When COVID-19 hit and baseball was no longer an option, the M.S. in Information Technology program was the perfect opportunity to harness my data passion and turn it into a career.”
Bishop earned a 4.0 GPA at Cal State Fullerton during his two years as a student in the fully-online cohort-based program. He recalls the collaboration of class projects as a highlight of his student experience.
“The program does a great job bringing classmates together to work on these projects, and because of this, I improved my business skills by leading meetings, contributing to a project, hitting deadlines and communicating with my fellow classmates. I owe my career readiness to the MSIT program as my current career uses all the skills I obtained while earning my master’s degree,” said Bishop.
Today, Bishop is in senior technology risk and assurance with EY in Irvine. He has benefited exponentially from learning about all the various technologies covered by the M.S. in Information Technology program. Information technology is constantly evolving. But Cal State Fullerton’s program is ahead of the curve, with the latest partnerships with automation companies such as UiPath and Alteryx and the most relevant research and teaching faculty.
IT infrastructure, code and analytics tools are among the aspects of IT trends and technologies that CSUF coursework emphasizes, and that Bishop believes are invaluable in preparation for information technology careers.
“The professors broke down each technology to a sufficient level of precision for a novice like me to understand and master,” he said. “The MSIT program at CSUF is a perfect launching pad for anyone who wants to change career paths to an IT-based role or to increase their current IT knowledge in their current position. Also, the program offers a flexible, remote learning schedule, which helped me navigate career and learning goals.”
