Brazil Program Fosters STEM Collaboration

Sixty-two Brazilian students are studying and conducting research at Cal State Fullerton thanks an initiative that seeks to foster innovation and collaboration in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

The Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP) provides scholarships to Brazilian students through their government, allowing the students to study for a year in the U.S. and other countries.

“The program plays an important role in bringing students from the two countries together for study and research in the competitive STEM fields,” says Kari Knutson Miller, interim associate vice president of international programs and global engagement and dean of University Extended Education.

Preparing CSUF students for participation in a global society is both a component of the University’s strategic plan and core to the mission of the University’s international programs and global engagement, explains Knutson Miller. She says the Brazilian program also strengthens CSUF’s relationships with institutional partners in Brazil, and increases cooperation across STEM fields.

The BSMP students are enrolled through University Semester Abroad and take classes or engage in independent study in addition to conducting research with CSUF students before completing their degrees in Brazil.
