Burgtorf and the Magna Carta Sept. 8

Jochen Burgtorf, professor of history and a scholar of medieval history, will discuss “What’s So Great About the ‘Great Charter’?” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, as part of the Fullerton Public Library’s free Town & Gown Lecture Series.

This year marks the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, the document issued by King John of England. “It is considered one of the most foundational texts in the legal and constitutional history of the western hemisphere because of its core guarantees of ‘liberties’ — such as the right of a trial by jury,” said Burgtorf. “This lecture will discuss the history leading up to the issuing of the document, its original contents, its witnesses, and its short- and long-term legacy.”

The evening program will be held at the main library, 353 W. Commonwealth Ave., Fullerton, 92832. More information is available by calling 714-738-6338.
