Introducing Alison S. Marzocchi

Advancing the Teaching, Learning of Mathematics

Alison S. Marzocchi, assistant professor of mathematics, joined Cal State Fullerton from the University of Delaware, where she earned her doctorate in mathematics education. The former research and teaching assistant seeks to advance the understanding of teaching and learning mathematics and computer science, and to improve teacher preparation.

Why did you pursue the opportunity to join the Titan community?

By the time I reached the end of the job posting, I knew I was packing up my bags in New Jersey and moving to California. I was impressed with Cal State Fullerton and the Department of Mathematics' value of teaching mathematics for understanding — rather than memorizing — the collaboration within the department, and the campuswide desire to support underrepresented students.

What do you most look forward to now that you’re here?

I am very excited about teaching future teachers. I also look forward to working with a large number of first-generation college students (like myself) and conducting research on how to best support them in higher education, specifically in mathematics courses.

What areas of continued scholarship and research are of particular interest to you?

My research strives to improve the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students in mathematics-related college degrees. To support this goal, I research things like the effectiveness of college-support programs, what and how we communicate to students about the usefulness of mathematics, and what successful colleges are doing to support underrepresented students in mathematics.

What are some of your outside activities, hobbies or interests?

I am vegan and obsessed with food, both cooking and trying new restaurants. I love taking road trips in my Mini Cooper convertible. I love this car, it’s my third one! I also enjoy playing volleyball, doing yoga, riding on roller coasters and going to concerts.
