CSUF Hosts College Readiness Event Jan. 10 for Local Educators
Agenda Features Initiatives That Boost College Success
Jan. 6, 2017
More than 200 high school superintendents, principals and counselors from Orange County and the region will gather at Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, Jan. 10, to learn about initiatives designed to help secondary students get ready for college-level coursework.
"Getting high school students prepared for the rigors of higher education increases their likelihood of staying in college and graduating," said Larry R. Chapa, Early Assessment Program (EAP) and college readiness senior coordinator.
Guest speakers will address the importance of K-12 and higher education collaboration, while providing updates to key California State University and CSUF college readiness initiatives and programs, said Chapa.
Media representatives may attend the 8:30-11:30 a.m. EAP College Readiness Breakfast at the Fullerton Marriott (southeast corner of the CSUF campus), 2701 E. Nutwood Ave., Fullerton, 92831. (The event is not open to the public.)
Initiatives and programs have dramatically helped to increase the college readiness of high school students entering the CSU, Chapa noted. In fall 2016, for example, 81.46 percent of the 4,426 freshmen entering CSUF were ready for college-level coursework in math and English without the need for remediation — compared to nearly 49 percent in 2009.
In addition to Chapa, speakers include:
- 8:45 a.m. — Al Mijares, Orange County superintendent of schools, who will deliver the keynote address;
- 9 a.m. — Carolina Cardenas, CSU director of academic outreach and early assessment, will offer CSU updates on college readiness and the new CSU data website for secondary education administrators;
- 10 a.m. — Jessica Wagoner, CSUF director of admissions, will discuss the Early Start program and provide CSUF admissions updates, including the new application process;
- 10:45 a.m. — Chris Street, CSUF professor of secondary education and EAP faculty adviser, will give an overview of the expository reading and writing curriculum.
