Honorary alumnus and longtime university supporter, Arnold Miller, died Oct. 19. The former president of Technology Strategy Group and corporate vice president of electronics operations for Xerox was instrumental in the invention of Xeroradiography, (X-rays that detect breast cancer, also referred to as Xeromammography). He had particular interests in science, continuing education and gerontology.

He and his wife, Beverly S. Miller, supported Cal State Fullerton’s Gerontology Academic Program and Guardian Scholars Program. Miller actively served on the University Advisory Board for almost two decades and on the Blue Ribbon Organizing Committee from 1996 to 2001, and was a member of several other university programs.

In 1996, Miller and his wife established the Beverly and Arnold Miller University Scholarship in Gerontology with an endowment gift. Since then, 104 students have been beneficiaries of their scholarship.

Beverly died in 2009 and in 2010, to honor his late wife’s memory, Miller awarded the university’s CATLab (Cultivating Autonomy through Technology Laboratory) with a grant to support future gero-engineers in developing assistive technology for older adults to successfully age in their own homes.

“Dr. Miller and his wife, Beverly, were two of the Gerontology Program’s greatest champions,” said Laura Zettel-Watson, professor of psychology and coordinator of the Gerontology Academic Program. “They took an interest in every scholarship recipient, delighting in each of their educational and career successes.”

For his contributions to Cal State Fullerton, Miller received such accolades as the 2007 Legends and Legacies Bronze Legacy Honoree Award and 1996 Vision and Visionaries Honorary Alumnus Award. He served as a guest speaker at the commencement ceremony for the Department of Sociology and Gerontology in 2009.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2:30 p.m. at Temple Beth Tikvah, 1600 N. Acacia Ave., Fullerton.
