For the first 13 years of her life, Flor Edwards grew up in what many people call a cult. The Children of God was a controversial religious movement that began in Huntington Beach in 1968 as Teens for Christ and still operates today under the name The Family International.
The group believed that as God’s chosen people, it would be spared from a 1993 apocalypse that never occurred. Edwards and her family eventually left the group, and she found herself navigating school for the first time. Her academic journey ultimately led her to Cal State Fullerton, where she graduated in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in communications.
Returning to her alma mater Thursday, Dec. 13, Edwards will join CSUF religious studies scholars Jeanette Reedy Solano and James Santucci in a discussion about her book, “Apocalypse Child: A Life in End Times,” and her experiences with The Children of God. Free and open to the public, the 3-5 p.m. event takes place at the Golleher Alumni House.
